Personal Honors Project-Design
For my Personal project I would like to design a Hammer for a game called Monster Hunter: World. This game has a wide variety of weapons and using hammers a lot, I would like to come up with a full design sheet myself. I am going to create most of the parts in Adobe Illustrator and I might use Adobe Photoshop for other parts. I would like to do this project because I am very passionate about the games and their designs and attention to detail have always been fascinating to me. I would like to have a try at designing something for a series I have loved for a long time.
Beta 4
From here I finalized the hammer's design. I have other things to add, but those are minor things. The lines are thicker because I wanted to make it more easily visible. The two versions have one with the jet open, and one with the jet closed. There is also a lever with a pipe leading to the jet, but I think I might add a few more than that. I also removed the chains and gears because the image seemed too detailed and complex for the kind of poster i'm going for. |
Reflection Paper
My 2 projects are posters for video games, Mario Kart and Monster Hunter: World. The client project is the Mario Kart poster, which was requested by my friend Darius Pettiway. My personal project is a poster for Monster Hunter in which I designed a new hammer for the game. For my client, Darius requested a poster for a track in mario kart called toad circuit. I started with a design including the map, but he didn’t want a map, instead including the bridge, arcs over the stage, and a grassy background. I don’t know why he chose it, but I was happy to work on a project using illustrator.
With this project, one of my main difficulties was contacting the client. Darius was tremendously difficult to contact, being busy on his own schoolwork. Even among the rest of my friends, he replies to messages the least. Changing something and then going back to him only to find him gone was such a pain, it slowed down the project a lot. If I were to change how I did things, I would try to keep the client in a call for longer to be able to get multiple changes to the project done quickly. I also should’ve come up with plenty of different versions in advance for every time I discussed with the client, just to speed things up. Obviously, I learned my lesson in picking an available client and coming up with options in advance for meetings. I found a client very late on, only a little bit before the client finding deadline. I should’ve decided on my projects as quickly as possible to maximize work time.
For my personal project, as I said, I made a poster/design for a new hammer in MH. The design started out as a kinda steampunk-ey hammer with weird pointy gears and a chain. Eventually I decided, there’s a rocket powered greatsword in the game right? There’s no reason I can’t make a rocket powered hammer then! I got to work pulling up a reference for a basic hammer and the rocket powered greatsword. I chose this project because MH is one of my favorite games, and since the game has design competitions sometimes, I might as well practice designing weapons for it.
With this project, I obviously didn’t have any client problems, working for myself and all. I had various problems coming up with ideas because every time I sat down to do it I wouldn’t be feeling very creative at the time. If I were to do it again, I would write down more ideas I come up with on the spot as to not lose them later. Through doing this project, I realized again how difficult some of the tools are to use in Illustrator sometimes. I tried using the live paint tool but sometimes it was inconsistent and wouldn’t work correctly.
Some overall stuff I would’ve done better for both projects would be managing my flash drive better, using the last week of project work better, and getting things done faster. I kept leaving my flash drive either in the classroom when I meant to bring it home or leaving it at home when meaning to take it to school. For the last week of project work, I did some work but not nearly as much as I could have. I did more bellwork and Quizlet than I did projects. Lastly, I'm just gonna be honest and say about a third of my work was done over Christmas break, so I could have spaced out my work time a bit more than that.
